Broadcast production is a very broad course under mass communication, in order not to get you thinking of where to start from or how to start, This is to tell you the basic things you need to know about broadcast production in order to have a full ideas on what it is all about.

We do hear the word broadcast almost everyday and we do listen to broadcast on radio, we watch on TV and we also do hear the word production which simply refers to the process of creating or making something in particular.

Example; music production, film production, clothes production, food production and many others. Broadcast and Production are familiar words.

This is a course that will make you understand how every Media outlet such as a TV station and radio station operates, it basically deals with creativity and technicality when it comes to creating content.

 Broadcasting:

Broadcasting refers to the transmission of information to a large number of people (Viewers and Audience) through radio and television signals. This transmission is done electronically.

Broadcast Production:

 Broadcast production Can simply be defined as the act of applying creativity and technicality to direct and operate media equipment in order to produce media contents that will reach a large number of people through networks or signals.

Broadcast production basically deals with the skills of creating, operating and disseminating information through TV and radio to the masses. It is to give you ideas on all the technical and transmission operations in the media outlets.

Forms of Broadcast Production

The are two basic types of broadcast production;

  1. The television broadcast production; which deals with the informative visuals you see on TV using signals and even on the internet with your phone using the network.
  2. Radio broadcast production; which deals with only sound, information is being transmitted to people through signals, although it depends on the range and the environment.

Stages Of Broadcast Production

There can’t  just be a media content production, there’s always a starting point before arriving at the main production. below are the stages of broadcast production;

  1. The conceptualization stage of broadcast production
  2. The pre-production stage of broadcast production
  3. The production stage of broadcast production
  4. The post-production stage of local production.

Above are the only stages or levels to pass through before arriving at a final production to disseminate to the last number of people out there.

The viewers and audience need facts, so broadcast production must pass through different stages of levels to gather factual information and deliver comprehensible information to the people.

The Conceptualization Stage:

The conceptualization stage is the first and the most important stage of broadcast production. It is in this stage of broadcast production that the idea generation begins, the concept and gathering of informative materials through research, investigation or questioning is carried out.

Without the ideal topic of discussion and facts there won’t be anything to broadcast at all, because every broadcast production has a topic it’s revolving around for the benefits of the audience or viewers. (Radio broadcast production and Television broadcast production)

There are usually groups of people in every Media outlet that are automatically assigned to generate ideas, find facts and get interesting topics of discussion. These people are good at what they do that is why we get good Media content today.

The Pre – Production Stage:

The pre-production stage of broadcast production is the second stage which deals with the planning of the general production. It involves;

  • Assembling the cast and crew from the camera operator, sound, costume designer, makeup artist, director, camera operator down to the people involved in the program such as;
    •  The interviewee, all the guests in general that have things to say out to the people in line with the topic of discussion.
  • It also deals with choosing the right and best time for the production

The Production Stage:

This is the stage of broadcast production where the main shooting happens. This is mostly done after rehearsals, when the cast and crew  knows everything they are supposed to do on set or in the studio before the shooting starts which involves the director giving directions on different camera shots and movements during the program while the recording is going on.

This is the stage where everyone gets busy in order to get a good result, although it is so stressful and it requires a lot of memory card space.

The Post – Production Stage:

The post-production stage of broadcast production simply deals with editing to be precise. This is where the removal of unwanted clips, distorted clip or clips where unwanted speeches were made.

  • The editing is done with the computer system by the editor and director. It is in the post-production stage that the arrangements of shots are made and even adding of titles, names of the broadcasters, presenters, interviewees or guests.

This is the final stage of broadcast production where the media content undergoes through refining and polishing before being disseminated to a large number of people through television or radio.

Importance Of Broadcast Production

  • Broadcast production helps in creating awareness and informing people on current issues
  • Broadcast production helps in increasing the rate of research. To get facts, one must observe and make confirmations having to meet different people or with different books on a topic.
  • It creates job opportunities for so many people out there and helps people to express they are shelves using their skills.

In summary, information is broadcast production, so without broadcast production there is no information. To be in this field, you must be intelligent, smart, honest , you must be able to work under pressure and you must always do research in order to get factually informative content that will be of benefit to people.
